True stability and durability come from a comprehensive plan and seeding the internet with related brand mentions to increase your chances of being recommended in AI.
Citations are not stable. Studies show high turnover in the sources cited from one month to the next. In fact, a source cited one month only has a 1-in-3 chance of being cited the next month. This volatility is one of the most complex and frustrating things about AI search. Unlike traditional Google rankings, which can remain stable for months or even years once earned, AI citations have a high turnover rate. They can disappear or rotate with little warning.
Just how volatile are AI citations?
AI citations have rapid turnover
- A Profound analysis of 883,000 pages across seven AI engines found the median pages loses half of the citation share within 11 days of peaking. In fact, 78% of cited pages fall to half of their peak within a two-week period. This is an extremely short half-life and means that what works one week may not work the next. You must be constantly iterating.
- Cross-engine correlation is near zero. Lasting on one engine is not an indicator that you will last on another. Being cited by five or more engines is where you want to be for longer survival.
- Across consecutive observations, the same buyer questions can show up to 45% turnover in the citation pool across the various engines.
To sum this up: AI visibility is not a quick fix. It is a continuous maintenance job, and as you think about earning citations and where to get brand mentions, you should focus on what will provide your brand exposure and stability, no matter what the engines are citing now. Of course, use the current citation pool as an indicator, but don’t marry yourself to the current pool as though it will be there forever.
A great example of an AI visibility ‘hack’ that did not last: Reddit
Reddit was a high-profile example of a citation source that got heavily exploited earlier in 2025-2026. It ranked as the single-most cited domain across many verticals in multiple engines. That status was lost in August 2026 and has not recovered since.
Reddit’s citation share in ChatGPT:
| Dataset | Reddit share of citations | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Travel prompts | 13% (May) 0.04% (Sept) | Near-total wipeout |
| Retail prompts | 15% (May) 0.14% (Sept) | Near-total wipeout |
| Education prompts | 17% to 0% in two weeks | Complete disappearance |
What happened?
It’s not that ChatGPT stopped reading Reddit. If you look at the retrieval data, you can see that Reddit is still consulted by ChatGPT during research. It is just not citing them in the final answer, meaning that what ChatGPT finds during its read of related Reddit threads to these queries does not send strong enough signals to be cited.
In Google, in either AI Mode or AI Overviews, the decline of Reddit citations was less noticeable.
Other citation ‘quick wins’ that became irrelevant or unimpactful
Assuming ‘Top Ten’ rankings in Google leads to citations
This link has weakened dramatically over the course of this year. Earlier, about 76% of the AI Overview recommendations could be correlated to a top Google search answer. Now, that number is down to 37%, and that will probably continue to change.
One-off listicles and best-of lists without ongoing authority
Showing up on a few outlying ‘best-of’ rankings or one-off listicles where the brand is listed but there is no supporting evidence for this elsewhere is not working as well as it did, and is highly susceptible to the same drops due to manipulation.
Heavy reliance on any single domain for the majority of citations
With the current (and projected future) volatility of citations, relying too much on all of your citations coming from one domain is risky. Even if your market shows a lot of Reddit in the citations, or YouTube, or some other source, diversifying your brand mentions across a multitude of sources is key to future stability and success.
What’s next
Creating a stable set of brand mentions is the key to durable visibility, along with other foundational activities that are good for both AEO and SEO. Focus on:
- Clear, authoritative owned content
- Multi-engine presence
- Continuous monitoring and outreach for new mentions
- Build real topical authority for your brand all across the web
Reddit and other strategies can work in different use cases, but you really need an analysis of your brand to figure out what will be a permanent and sustainable lever for your brand.
