The short version

You show up in the AI answer. Great! But the information is incorrect. Not so great. You can check the claims that AI makes about your product or service, and better yet, get insight into where it is getting this information.

Start with the most common customer queries

Products change regularly, pricing gets updated, features move around, some things are sunsetted, new integrations happen, new markets are added and old ones removed. The point is, companies change.

The problem with this is that sometimes the AI engines don’t keep up with all of the changes and they can surface inaccurate or outdated information when your customer is looking for something.

When trying to find out what the answer engines say about your company, start with some facts that could impact someone directly on your customer journey.

This could be things like:

  • Current plans and pricing
  • Important features
  • Product integrations
  • Availability by country or region
  • Who the product is designed for

You can do this question-hunting manually, but the easiest thing to do to see how you appear across all platforms is to use prompt visibility software (like Seed) to see how you show up. If you know you have outdated information on your website, fix that first.

Find out where the bad information came from

The AI engines use a combination of ‘owned’ first-party sources (i.e. your website) and off-site, third-party sources to develop their answers.

The AI visibility software in Seed shows the citations (sources) behind the prompts.

Sometimes the cited page is on your site and it’s an easy fix.

Sometimes the outdated information is from some other location on the web, so you’ll need to reach out to the publication and see if they will update it.

Sometimes you won’t be able to identify the source at all. The AI engines don’t give 100% transparency into how they come up with their answers. In this case, extra brand mentions across the web with the correct information could assist in getting the answer engines to surface the correct answer.

Fixing the source does not guarantee immediate changes

Search engines and AI systems need to recrawl a page before updated information appears in their answers. AI engines like ChatGPT, Claude and others have different cadences for updating their answers, depending on the prompt.

Record when the new correction went live and keep tracking the prompt to see updates.
